It pains me to say this, especially this early into the season, but it’s over. RIP to the 2017 New York Mets. After losing their 6th straight last night to the D-Backs and dropping to NINE games out of the division and six games under .500 I’m comfortable enough to say this isn’t our year.
This season has gone wrong in every possible way imaginable, and I really don’t think there’s anyone to blame. For starters, take a look at the list of players below that have been injured so far: Cespedes, Familia, Syndergaard, Lugo, Matz, Cabrera, D’araund, Wright, Duda just returned as well. Every team deals with injuries, so it’s no excuse. However, it’s basically impossible to overcome extended absences from your best relief pitcher, starting pitcher, and position player.
More so than the injuries, by far the worst thing about this season has been the pitching which has basically single handedly torpedoed their season. As of writing this, their team ERA is dead last in the major leagues at 5.15. It’s been excruciating to watch. Lugo and Matz have apparently just vanished into thin air like the Sudden Departure from the Leftovers, Harvey has been an absolute disaster and will 100 % be traded either at the deadline or this offseason, Gsellman has an era of over 7.00, and Syndergaard refuses to get MRIS. Need I go on? Oh yea, Terry Collins has totally overworked the bullpen to the point of exhaustion. That’s not all on him since the starters are averaging right around five innings per start but when you go to the same guys 3 days in a row it’s usually not good. Plus he jsut sucks.
With this said, I’m being a realist this year. Their current playoff odds sit at 21% with plenty of season left. Forget about the division, the Nationals are to good and there’s 0 chance we make up 9 games on them the rest of the way. The rest of the NL is pretty weak though so the Wild Card isn’t out of the question totally. Maybe they get healthy. Maybe Lugo and Matz come back by the end of May and the rotation stabilizes. Maybe they call up Ahmed Rosario and he turns out to be every bit as great as it looks like he’s going to be. Maybe Noah comes back in July like Kershaw did last year and picks up where he left off.
Too many maybe, not enough definite. A more realistic scenario right now seems to be continuing this slog of the season and selling off pieces at the trading deadline, which the organization can capitalize on. Walker, Bruce, Duda, Reed, Cabrera are all going to be free agents and each can probably fetch some nice pieces for the future.
Just another year in Mets land.
